Our friend and alumna Caroline Baker died on October 28, 2017. Caroline was a student in the master’s program in Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies (REECAS) from 2004-2006. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Caroline studied Turkish, Uzbek, and Urdu and also took courses in Russian and Eurasian politics, history, and literature. After graduation, Caroline served in the Office of Naval Intelligence and then as a Foreign Service Officer in the U.S. Department of State, where she held posts in Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, and Washington, D.C.
We at CREECA will remember Caroline for her intelligence and for her generosity in sharing her expansive knowledge with others. Whether she was talking with high school students about Uzbekistan at the 2006 public outreach event “A Day in Central Asia and the Caucasus” or presenting to current graduate students as part of an alumni panel on preparing for the job search, Caroline was a true public servant.
