Wisconsin’s winters may be cold, but they are never too frigid for supporting refugees and immigrants. On Saturday, March 4th, 2023, around 300 runners will brave the elements to run or walk the 42nd annual Freeze for Food event to raise money for Wisconsin refugees and immigrants facing food security issues. The Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Wisconsin-Madison (RPCV) and Open Doors for Refugees (ODFR) are the race organizers and all proceeds will go to ODFR.

Both events (5K and 10K) start and end at the Vilas Park Shelter, 1602 Vilas Park Dr., Madison, WI 53715. 5K Walk or Run Start time: 12 p.m. CST sharp 10K Run Start time: 1 p.m. CST sharp Any refugee can register for free on site by asking to join “Team ODFR.” Others will pay a registration fee donated to ODFR. The 5K (3 mi.) Walk or Run option follows Vilas Park’s scenic roads and sidewalks and roads along Lake Wingra’s northern shore. The 10K race circles Lake Wingra, passing through the Arboretum. After a pandemic and an economically challenging 2022, the 42nd Freeze for Food aims to be very impactful. Ken Baun, volunteer general manager of ODFR adds, “Madison’s low-wage earners are emerging slowly from the past two COVID winters, but the progress of refugees who lost jobs or who endured illness seems slower. Last year’s arrivals from Afghanistan and Ukraine flounder as their status with the U.S. government seems shaky. The devastating earthquake in Syria and Turkey remind us that tragedies do not wait.” The event welcomes not only runners, but also families, strollers, dogs on leashes, and all Wisconsinites intrepid enough to enjoy getting out on a winter’s day RegisterThis event is not sponsored by CREECA.
