About the Ukrainian History Global Initiative (UHGI)
The Ukrainian History Global Initiative (UHGI) is developing a comprehensive online platform featuring a wide range of scholarly research outputs. These materials will later form the basis of a major print and digital publication to be produced in collaboration with a leading publishing partner.
Role Overview
The Managing Editor will play a central role in shaping the editorial coherence, scholarly quality, and overall consistency of UHGI’s multi-author publication project. Working closely with the Academic Council, contributing authors, and the publishing partner, the Managing Editor will ensure academic excellence, stylistic clarity, and alignment across all content.
Administratively, the Managing Editor reports to the UHGI General Manager and works in close coordination with the Head of the Academic Council on all scholarly matters.
In addition, the Managing Editor will lead and oversee a team of Editors, ensuring effective editorial workflows and high-quality outputs across both Ukrainian and English-language materials.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the editorial process across all research outputs, ensuring academic rigor, stylistic clarity, and thematic consistency.
- Work closely with contributing scholars to refine arguments, structure, and sourcing, while respecting authorial voice and scholarly independence.
- Coordinate with the Head of the Academic Council and its members on scholarly standards, peer review processes, and content development.
- Collaborate with editors at the Final Publisher(s) on editorial standards, style guidelines, and publication timelines for both online and print outputs.
- Ensure factual accuracy, proper citation, and adherence to recognized academic norms across all content.
- Help coordinate peer review, revisions, and production scheduling in collaboration with the UHGI Administrative Management Team.
- Exercise editorial authority to request substantive revisions and to recommend acceptance or deferral of content, in consultation with the Academic Council.
Team Leadership and Management
- Lead and manage a team of Editors working under their supervision, ensuring high standards of editorial quality, consistency, and efficiency.
- Assign and oversee editorial tasks, balancing workload and aligning team efforts with project timelines and priorities.
- Provide guidance, feedback, and mentorship to Editors, supporting their professional development and ensuring adherence to UHGI’s editorial standards.
- Establish and maintain clear editorial workflows and communication practices within the team.
- Coordinate the work of Editors with authors, translators, and the Academic Council to ensure smooth integration of all editorial processes.
- Review and approve editorial work, ensuring consistency across Ukrainian and English texts and alignment with the project’s scholarly objectives.
Workload and Contractual Framework
The workload will vary over the project lifecycle, with peak editorial periods anticipated during coordinated review and production phases. This role is offered as an independent consultancy contract governed by the law of England and Wales.
Qualifications
Required
- Proven editorial experience with academic publications in public history and large-scale, multi-author projects.
- Native or near-native proficiency in English.
- Demonstrated experience managing editorial workflows and/or leading editorial teams.
Desirable
- Advanced degree (preferably MA, PhD or equivalent scholarly experience) in History, Slavic Studies, Philology, Area Studies, or a related humanities field.
- Knowledge of Ukrainian or Eastern European history.
- Reading knowledge of the Ukrainian language.
- Familiarity with digital humanities projects or online scholarly publishing platforms.

- A cohesive and publication-ready manuscript aligned with publisher requirements.
- Effective management of the editorial team and timely delivery of outputs in line with project milestones.
