For the second year in a row, CREECA has received Title VIII funding from the U.S. Department of State for the Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI). The Title VIII Program, administered by the Bureau of Intelligence and Research, provides funding for research and language training to American scholars and students for the study of Eastern Europe and Eurasia (Independent States of the Former Soviet Union). Title VIII maintains U.S. expertise in the regions and brings open source, policy-relevant research to the service of the U.S. Government. The grant will be used to fund 10 fellowships for graduate students, scholars, and working professionals to study intensive Kazakh, Tajik, Uyghur, or Uzbek at CESSI 2018.
The fellowship competition will open concurrently with the CESSI application, in late October 2017. Fellowship applicants must be U.S. citizens. While CESSI is committed to offering elementary and intermediate Kazakh, Tajik, Uyghur, and Uzbek, more levels and languages could be added with sufficient student interest. Email cessi@creeca.wisc.edu with any questions.
CREECA is thankful for the Department of State’s continued support for this important program.
