Workshop: 68.77.89: Czechoslovakia From Invasion to Revolution

A workshop for Wisconsin and Iowa educators

Sponsored by the Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The workshop will take place July 11-13, 2018, at the Madison Concourse Hotel.

This three-day workshop introduces educators to the causes and legacies of Czechoslovakia’s culture of dissent. Educators will hear from expert speakers on topics including the 1968 Prague Spring uprising and its aftermath, the Charter 77 movement, and the 1989 Velvet Revolution. Participants will explore primary sources and classroom-ready activities through interactive modules, and they will work with museum staff and a curriculum development specialist on incorporating the workshop content into their lesson plans.

The workshop will link past and present by emphasizing the importance of civic engagement and the performative nature of democracy. Participants will come away with new tools for engaging with students on the Prague Spring and Velvet Revolution, as well as new ideas for applying lessons from Czechoslovakia’s totalitarian past to today’s globalized world.

The workshop is open to Iowa and Wisconsin educators. While the content and activities may be of most interest to middle and high school teachers, elementary school teachers, community college instructors, school administrators, and librarians are also welcome to participate. Financial support for educators coming from outside Dane County, Wisconsin is available on a first come, first served basis.

Registration is now open! Apply here by June 1, 2018.
