The Language Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for the position of Language Institute Assistant Director. Applications for this full-time position are due by October 4.

The Language Institute Assistant Director helps to fulfill this mission by leading and managing pre-college and community initiatives, and by managing the Doctoral Program in Second Language Acquisition.  The specific duties for the position can be found here and below.

 

An MA in Second Language Acquisition, Curriculum & Instruction (world language education emphasis), Applied Linguistics, or a related area, with a specialization in a language other than English, is required. A PhD in one these fields is preferred.

Principal duties:

53% Leader/Manager-Pre-College and Community Initiatives
Envision, lead, and manage Language Institute programs for pre-college and community audiences, in collaboration with academic departments and other campus units: engage in program development and strategic planning; identify and advance educational goals in curricula and program plans; develop learning objectives, targeted learning outcomes, and appropriate assessment measures; oversee recruitment and enrollment; manage staffing and volunteers; oversee external communications; ensure compliance with state and university pre-college requirements; represent the Language Institute in meetings of campus pre-college and youth programs; administer program evaluations; write reports. Identify funding sources, including grants and co-sponsorships, and write grant proposals. Manage budgets for the unit’s pre-college and community initiatives.

40% Manager – Doctoral Program in Second Language Acquisition
Manage the daily activities of the Doctoral Program in Second Language Acquisition (SLA): manage communication between the Graduate School, faculty, staff, and students; maintain student and program records; coordinate recruitment and admissions; initiate and organize professional development workshops and lectures; respond to policy, advising, and other program questions; initiate and draft new policy and reports on behalf of the program; provide administrative support to the SLA director and SLA Steering Committee (SLA SC); take minutes at SLA SC meetings; coordinate preliminary exams, dissertation proposal defenses, and final oral examinations; manage graduation administrative procedures and commencement-related matters; manage fellowship awards. Manage the SLA PhD Program’s budget.

7% Manager – Language Institute
Serve as Language Institute office manager. Coordinate travel for visitors and for faculty, staff and students affiliated with Language Institute programs and projects.
