Opportunity: 2020-21 Fulbright-Hays DDRA competition

The 2020-2021 Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) competition is now open. Yes, it’s early this year. Very, very early. But open!

The deadline for submission of a complete application, including all supporting documents, is 10:00 am, Thursday, February 13, 2020.

Go to http://iris.wisc.edu/funding/students/ddra/ for information on the application process & campus guidance, documents, resources, and deadlines.

The Fulbright-Hays DDRA funds doctoral candidates (US citizens, nationals, or permanent residents) to conduct research in other countries in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of 6 to 12 months. The grant does not fund research whose focus is on Western European countries (though it does allow & fund research visits to western European countries that are part of a larger project focused elsewhere).

For 2020 there are two areas identified as competitive preference priorities: projects that use the Less Commonly Taught Languages (defined as “any modern foreign language except French, German, or Spanish”); and projects conducted in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, computer science, education (comparative or international), international development, political science, public health, or economics.

Applications outside those competitive priorities are welcome and encouraged.

There will be a Fulbright-Hays DDRA open house & technical review for UW-Madison students on Wednesday, January 8, 2020, 1:00 – 2:00 pm in 336 Ingraham Hall for interested students on campus during winter break.

There will also be an information session (and technical review) on Thursday, January 23, 2020, 4:00 – 5:00 pm in 336 Ingraham Hall once classes have resumed.

Mark  Lilleleht will be available throughout winter break to meet and discuss the program, review statements, and otherwise assist applicants. There are past successful applications available for review; please contact Mark at awards@iris.wisc.edu if you are interested in reviewing those.
