Invitation and Call for Proposals

The Institute for Legal Studies is pleased to announce the 10th Midwest Law and Society Retreat to be held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on November 13-14, 2020. This biennial interdisciplinary retreat brings together faculty and graduate students from the region’s diverse social science and law programs for a weekend of intellectual exchange and community building. The 2020 Retreat will offer opportunities for participants to receive feedback on works-in-progress, discuss research methods and professional issues, and develop future projects with colleagues in the region. Participants are encouraged to submit proposals on any law and society topic or to just come to the Retreat to join in the discussion.
Register by June 1st: To register to attend or submit a proposal, please complete the Registration Form. We welcome both individual paper proposals and panel proposals. Advanced registration is required.
Location & Timeline: Sessions will take place at the Pyle Center, 702 Langdon Street. On Friday, November 13th, the Retreat will begin with the keynote address at 3:30 p.m. and end with dinner. Sessions will continue all day on Saturday, November 14th for all registered participants, ending at 5:00 p.m.
Keynote Speaker: This year’s keynote speaker will be Professor Penelope Andrews, President of the Law and Society Association, Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law, and Co-Director of the Racial Justice Project at New York Law School.
Registration Fees: Non-UW Faculty / Academic Staff: $250. Graduate Student / Independent Scholar: $100. The registration fee includes refreshments, dinner on Friday, and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. ILS will cover the registration fee for UW faculty, staff, and graduate students.
The Pyle Center will collect fees in August: Registration fees will not be collected until August, when all participants will be contacted by the Pyle Center and asked to confirm participation and pay the registration fee.

Graduate Student Housing Subsidy: Deadline August 10, 2020
The Institute for Legal Studies will subsidize a few hotel rooms shared by graduate students who do not have outside funding. This must be arranged well in advance – please email ils@law.wisc.edu by August 10, 2020.
