Nonresidential Scholars Program for Ukraine
In Partnership with the Big Ten Academic Alliance
Applications are invited from scholars in/from Ukraine in the social sciences and humanities for
one-year, nonresidential fellowships. Preference will be given to applicants who plan to be living in
Ukraine when the fellowship begins (October 2024). Preference will be given to applicants who
propose projects relevant to the program theme “Preservation and Restoration,” especially in the
context of Russia’s war on Ukraine. Successful applicants will receive a $5,000 grant (in two
installments) to support their research, writing, and/or teaching. They will have a one-year
appointment as Visiting Scholars at one of the participating US universities. Fellows will have access
to a computing account at their sponsor university, including access to digital resources and virtual
borrowing privileges of University Libraries. The program will support approximately 30 scholars.
Eligibility:
Scholars in/from Ukraine in the social sciences and humanities who are in a postgraduate program,
or hold a kandidat, doctor, or PhD degree are eligible for this program. Proficiency in English is a
plus but not a requirement for eligibility. Preference will be given to applicants who plan to be living
in Ukraine when the fellowship begins (October 2024).
Purpose:
The Nonresidential Scholars Program is intended to support scholars in/from Ukraine to continue
to advance their research, writing, and teaching activities. Applicants may apply for funds to support
research, writing (including translation) and creative projects, e.g. a publication project (special
journal issue, edited volume, textbook) or exhibition. Applications may also focus on teaching
development (e.g. course development project, creation of digital teaching assets and modules).
Collaborations with faculty members (tenure track and non-tenure track) at one of the participating
US universities are encouraged, but not required. Applications that engage the theme “Preservation
and Restoration,” especially as pertains to the situation in Ukraine, will be given preference.
Requirements and Program Features:
During the year of appointment, all selected nonresidential scholars will be invited to participate in
twice-monthly research seminars to build community and share ongoing work. Fellows are expected
to actively participate in the seminars.
Fellows will have the opportunity to attend virtual professionalization workshops on topics such as
academic publishing, interdisciplinary research, and current theoretical trends in Ukrainian studies,
led by prominent scholars and editors of leading interdisciplinary and area studies journals.
All program events and most communications will be fully bilingual in English and Ukrainian.
In spring 2025, fellows will be expected to organize panels and present the results of their research,
creative activity, and/or teaching activities undertaken during the fellowship at the annual (virtual)
Taras Shevchenko Ukrainian Studies Conference at Indiana University.
Fellows will submit a maximum 2-page report on accomplishments at the end of the fellowship.

Application may be made in English or Ukrainian. Application includes the following components:
- Basic demographic questions—Name, Contact Information, Discipline, Highest degree
received (year, institution), Major research interests, Major publications, Courses taught,
English proficiency - 1–2-page Statement of Purpose in English or Ukrainian outlining the proposed activity and
its expected benefit to the applicant’s programs of research, teaching, and/or creative
activity, as well as broader impacts on their home institution. Projects that engage the theme
“Preservation and Restoration” will be given preference. - List of grants and fellowships received or anticipated since March 1, 2022
