Job: Researcher, Europe and Central Asia (Human Rights Watch)

The Europe and Central Asia Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking applicants for the position of Researcher on Russia. The Europe and Central Asia Division works to promote human rights in the region and conducts a wide range of work, including human rights investigations, report writing, advocacy, building local partnerships, and media work. In consultation with the Russia Program Director, the Researcher will be responsible for researching and reporting on human rights conditions in Russia, and for developing and implementing advocacy strategies on human rights in Russia. The position reports to the Deputy Director of the Europe and Central Asia Division, based in the New York Office, and collaborates closely with the Russia Program Director, based in Moscow. This position will be based in Moscow with an anticipated start date of September 2018.

Basic Responsibilities:

  1. Research, monitor and document human rights abuses by collecting and analyzing information from a wide variety of sources including governments, local media, NGOs, victims, witnesses, journalists, diplomats, government agencies and others in the field;
  2. Write and publicize reports, briefing papers, letters, news releases, op-eds, and submissions to international bodies based on research findings; collect supporting documents and materials such as photographs and videos;
  3. Develop and implement local, regional, and international strategies to change abusive laws, policies, and practices.

Basic Requirements:

  1. Education: An advanced (graduate) degree in international relations, journalism, law, social sciences, or related studies is required.
  2. Experience: A minimum of three to five years of experience in human rights, journalism, law, or related fields, including time spent working in Russia, is required.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Russian are required; ability to speak another local language is desirable.
