Job: Executive Director, Institute for Regional and International Studies (IRIS)

The Institute for Regional and International Studies (IRIS) is currently recruiting for an Executive Director

IRIS is part of the International Division, which also oversees International Academic Programs (study abroad), the International Internships Program, and International Projects Office (international partnerships). IRIS is comprised of nine area studies centers, the Wisconsin Summer Language Institutes (WISLI), and the International Studies major. Each of the nine area studies centers serves a distinct community of faculty and students with a regional focus (e.g. Africa, East Asia, Europe, etc.) who come from departments across campus, based in one of the university?s many colleges and divisions (e.g. College of Letters and Science, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, etc.). The area studies centers support their research and teaching while also offering a variety of complimentary academic programs such as joint degrees, M.A.s, B.A.s, undergraduate certificates (minors), and Ph.D. minors. Each center supports study abroad programs and facilitates scholarly exchanges, the teaching of regionally-specific languages (via language departments during the academic year and WISLI during the summer), and area studies research and teaching by faculty and graduate students. Each center also maintains a vigorous outreach presence in schools and the broader community. Many of the nine area studies centers are federally-funded under the Department of Education Title VI program, and have garnered national reputations for excellence over many decades of dedicated work. IRIS was founded in 2016 to consolidate administrative support services for each of these nine area studies centers in order to cement UW-Madison?s legacy as national leader in area studies education. The IRIS executive director position was created in part to develop and support cross-regional programming on campus.

The IRIS Executive Director reports directly to the faculty director of IRIS and secondarily to the associate dean of the International Division.
