Job Summary:
International Student Services (ISS) seeks a passionate international educator and outgoing person to contribute to our international student engagement team. The team is responsible for the year-round planning, coordination, and assessment of ISS engagement events and co-curricular activities, including welcome events for new students, transition events for graduating students, and myriad social, cultural, and academic-adjacent opportunities for enrolled students.
This individual will coordinate a student peer mentorship program to cultivate leadership skills and inclusive engagement between U.S. and international students. This individual will also advise the Wisconsin International Student Association (WISA) and serve as point-of-contact for ten or more registered student organizations affiliated with ISS. Affiliated student organizations are eligible to apply for grant money for events and activities on campus and in the community which promote global awareness. The incumbent will coordinate the grant application, award, and reconciliation processes.
This position reports to the Assistant Director for Global Engagement and is an essential member of the Global Engagement Team (4 professional staff, 6 student staff) within the ISS office (26 staff). The Global Engagement seeks to intentionally and holistically support international students, campus, and the Madison community through coordinating events and programs that foster a sense of belonging, promote advocacy, and enhance global engagement. The Global Engagement Team supports all admitted and enrolled F/J students, F/J dependents, non-traditional international students, and U.S. students seeking to make connections with international peers. Some evening and weekend event staffing is required.
ISS serves over 7,000 F/J nonimmigrant students and over 2,000 alumni on post-completion employment authorization, in addition to the J-1 student intern program and processing initial documents for admitted students. We utilize Terra Dotta ISSS batch software to maintain F/J international student compliance and communications.
Responsibilities:
Designs, implements, and evaluates programs to engage and develop international students in order to foster an inclusive and diverse community.
10% Schedules logistics and secures and manages resources for various programs to support international students
60% Develops programming and resource materials, within budget guidelines and across various mediums, to provide co-curricular and engagement opportunities to international students
5% Interprets and communicates student rights, responsibilities, and options related to specific requests and situations
10% Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to advocate for international students, promoting their contributions to diverse communities
15% Supervise and mentor minimum one student engagement intern per semester
Tasks:
Curate promotional content for ISS communications platforms
Secure space and resources for ISS and ISS-affiliated registered student organization programs and co-curricular events
Cultivate leadership development of international and domestic students at all degree levels through participation in ISS peer mentorship program, etc
Recruit, screen, and match a diverse cohort of enrolled students to participate in an ISS peer mentorship program each semester
Develop assessment tools to effectively evaluate inclusive international student engagement activities that evolve to meet student needs
Develop events and programs to foster a welcoming and inclusive international community
Contribute to co-curricular workshops to promote international student academic, social, and professional success and intersections of F/J student immigration regulations
Participate in regular staff meetings and occasional ISS advising check-in
Coordinate Global Badger Experience Grant (GBEG) application, monies, and reporting for affiliated registered student organizations to host and promote international engagement
Represent ISS on planning committees, at trainings, etc. to promote inclusive engagement and representation of international students
Liaise and collaborate with Exchange and Visiting Programs across several campus units.
