Polish Dance Workshops with Duane Tomka (Festival of Christmas and Midwinter Traditions)
December 29, 2021 @ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm
Join Duane Tomka for workshops in Polish folk dancing. As the choreographer of Syrena Polish Folk Dance Ensemble since 2006, Duane worked closely with beloved Polish folk dance legend Ada Dziewanowska.
On December 29th, the workshop will explore dances of the Kaszuby region. The Kaszuby region is part of the Pomeranian region on the Baltic Sea. Being seafaring people, they encountered many other cultures which have influenced their dances and costumes. The Kaszuby dances are mostly gentle, joyful, and graceful. Although they have many characteristic traits of the dances from the rest of Poland, especially from the neighboring regions of Warmia, Wielkopolska and even Sląsk, they reveal obvious Swedish and German influences both in music and in dance steps.
On December 30th we’ll learn dances of the Spisz region. The Spisz (“Spee-sh”) region, dividing the two countries of Poland and Slovakia, is located one third in Poland and two thirds in Slovakia, in the Tatry mountain range.
This workshop is part of the Festival of Christmas and Midwinter Traditions. Further information on the festival and registration can be found here.
