Call for Judges: Wisconsin’s ACTR Olympiada of Spoken Russian

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia (CREECA) and the Russian Flagship Program invite UW-Madison graduate students to apply for paid positions as judges for Wisconsin’s ACTR Olympiada of Spoken Russian. The Olympiada is a competition for middle and high school students to demonstrate their proficiency speaking Russian; the event will take place from 11:00-4:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 23, 2023. POSITION DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES

● Attend an orientation meeting and training session.

● Complete required trainings and a criminal background check to ensure compliance with policies set by the UW-Madison Office of Youth Protection.

● Participate in a dry-run/dress rehearsal before the competition.

● Evaluate the oral proficiency of middle and high school students of Russian using the ACTR’s scoring rubric.

● Attend a post-program evaluation/debriefing meeting in the week following the event.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

● Current UW-Madison graduate student.

● Native speaker of Russian or advanced-high OPI Russian proficiency.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

● Interest in working with students of Russian as a foreign language.

● Excellent organizational and communication skills.

 

SCHEDULE, COMPENSATION, AND SUPERVISORS

● Schedule: Orientation and trainings will take place in April, with dates and times TBD depending on judges’ schedules. The total estimated time commitment for this position (including the event) is 10 hours.

● Compensation: $15/hour.

● Supervisors: Sarah Linkert (Assistant Director, Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia) and Jacob Aehl (Program Coordinator, Russian Flagship Program), the regional co-chairs of the Wisconsin ACTR Olympiada of Spoken Russian.
