Assistant Resident Director for NSLI-Y Virtual Summer Intensive Russian Program


American Cultural Exchange Service (ACES) is seeking a qualified Assistant Resident Director (ARD) to work virtually with a group of up to 20 US high school students for an approximately six-week program through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) Program. The students will engage in language and cultural learning through virtual classes, cultural activities and one-on-one peer partners. The ARD is required to attend a two-day pre-program training, which will be held virtually in late May to early June, participate in pre-program orientation and community building activities, represent ACES for the duration of the program (late June to mid-August), and submit reports during and immediately after the program.

NSLI-Y is a US State Department sponsored scholarship program funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. American high school students apply for merit-based scholarships to spend a summer, semester, or academic year studying less commonly taught languages. NSLI-Y encourages beginning, intermediate, and advanced language learners with a passion for learning languages, communicating across cultures, and living abroad in the future to apply. Participants are U.S. high school students between 15 and 18 years of age, who have beginner, intermediate or advanced Russian language skills.


  • Be under the leadership of the Resident Director (RD) and be willing to work closely with the RD.
  • Accomplish program related assignments set by RD or ACES staff.
  • Have dependable computer(s), reliable high-speed internet connection, and necessary audio/video equipment.
  • Participate in the online trainings for NSLI-Y VSI program.
  • Participate in Pre-Program orientation.
  • Assist RD to conduct pre-program activities with ACES to foster community building and language learning.
  • Provide support for students for questions related to the language and culture learning throughout the program via online platform provided by ACES.
  • “Sit in” each language and culture class according to RD’s arrangement.
  • Be available to students during “Office Hours”, a half hour before or a half hour after classes that are coordinated with RD.
  • Be a language resource when students have questions.
  • Be ready to be the interpreter for ACES staff when needed during the “Staff Sit in” on program classes and activities.
  • Assist RD on peer tutor activities.
  • Assist students with their culminating project.
  • Participate in and assist Overseas Partner with virtual cultural activities.
  • Assist RD to deliver weekly one-hour cultural discussion and program housekeeping issues.
  • Assist RD to submit required reports.
  • Assist RD to submit Weekly Highlights with video/photos/screenshots and detailed descriptions of activities according to the information in the Resident Director Handbook.
  • Follow all program operating procedures and policies.


  • Experience working with teenagers or high school students
  • Ability to counsel teens
  • Genuine understanding of American and Russian cultures
  • Proficient in Russian
  • Native fluency in English
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Study, work, or extensive travel experience in Russia
