The Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI) is an eight-week summer intensive language program for undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and professionals. In 2019 CESSI will offer courses in intensive elementary and intermediate Kazakh, Tajik, Uyghur, and Uzbek. Additional languages and levels may be offered with sufficient student interest, so apply early!
Several funding options are available for eligible applicants:
- Title VIII Fellowships are administered by the U.S. Department of State and provide funding for research and language training to American scholars and students for the study of Eastern Europe and Eurasia. The fellowships cover full tuition at CESSI and provide a stipend of $2,500 to cover living expenses for the summer. Fellowships are available to graduate students, postgraduate scholars, and professionals who are U.S. citizens.
- Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships cover full tuition at CESSI and provide a stipend of $2,500 to cover living expenses for the summer. Graduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents are encouraged to apply through their home institution.
- All CESSI students are eligible for a tuition remission scholarship, based on merit and availability of funding, of up to $4000.
The priority application deadline is February 1, 2019.
