FLAS fellowships are funded by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by the UW’s National Resource Centers to assist students in acquiring foreign language and either area or international studies competencies. FLAS awards are only available for specific languages and are contingent on federal funding. Awards offer tuition support and a stipend–for award details, please visit the FAQ page.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Students in professional fields are encouraged to apply.
Undergraduate students must be applying to study at the intermediate (2nd year) or advanced (3rd year or above) level of a less commonly taught language to receive a fellowship; undergraduate students may not apply for a FLAS at the beginning level of language study.
Graduate students might be granted an exception to allow study of the beginning level of a less commonly taught language with FLAS support if the student has achieved advanced proficiency in another language of the world area of specialization, and if learning a second language of that world area is required for the student’s overall training and expertise. Graduate students who are applying for beginning language study will need to explain why an exception should be granted as part of their application.
Students receiving academic year awards must be enrolled in full-time study for the duration of the FLAS award and must take one language course and one related area or international studies course each semester. Academic year awardees must be admitted to or enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, or professional programs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. FLAS awards may be used in some cases for undergraduates participating in official IAP programs and in very limited cases for dissertators.
For the 2022-23 academic year, eligible CREECA languages are:
Czech: 2nd year
Kazakh: 1st-2nd year
Persian (in relation to Central Asia): 1st-3rd year
Polish: 1st-4th year
Russian: 3rd year and above; 1st-2nd year Russian open to professional students only
Turkish (in Balkans or Central Asia): 1st-3rd year
Ukrainian: 2nd year (pending Department of Education approval)
Summer awards are for intensive language programs either domestically or abroad. Details on minimum contact hours and duration of allowable summer programs are outlined on the FLAS FAQ page. Summer FLAS awards may be used for study at UW-Madison by non-UW students; U.S. citizens, nationals, and permanent residents who will be enrolling at a UW-Madison summer language program are eligible to apply for summer FLAS awards.
Eligible summer study languages include any regional language offered through an intensive summer language program, such as UW’s Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute, the University of Pittsburgh’s Summer Language Institute, or Indiana University’s Summer Language Workshop. As during the academic year, summer awards may only be granted for 3rd-year-or-above Russian language study, except in the cases of professional school students.
