Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI)

Since 2011, CREECA has hosted the Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI), an eight-week summer intensive language training program for undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and professionals. CESSI offers courses in elementary and intermediate Kazakh, Tajik, Uyghur, and Uzbek, as well as a weekly lecture series (in English) and a rich program of cultural events and field trips related to the nations and peoples of Central Eurasia. Students who successfully complete the program receive eight credits from UW-Madison. Funding is available for eligible students in the form of Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships, Title VIII Fellowships, the WISLI Tuition Scholarship, and the fee remission (scholarship).

The CESSI consortium is comprised of international and area studies centers at major U.S. universities working together to provide high-quality, summer instruction in the languages and cultures of Central Eurasia.
